What is net worth?
What you have, minus what you owe. One number for where you stand.
The short answer
Your net worth is everything you have, minus everything you owe. It’s one number for where you stand today.
Add up what you have
Money in M-Pesa, in the bank, in savings like M-Shwari or a SACCO, and cash at home.
Take away what you owe
Fuliza you haven’t paid back, a loan, money you borrowed from a friend.
An example
- M-Pesa 12,340, bank 131,800, savings 19,705, cash 7,255: you have 171,100.
- You owe 2,150 in Fuliza.
- 171,100 minus 2,150: your net worth is 168,950.
Why it matters
Income tells you what came in. Net worth tells you what stayed. If it goes up from one month to the next, you’re building. If it goes down, you can look at why.
What you can do this week
- Add up what you have today.
- Take away what you owe.
- Write the number down, and check it again next month.
What to remember
- Net worth is what you have, minus what you owe.
- If it goes up from month to month, you’re building.
